Train to Perform
February 2, 2025
Program Extended! Join us for non-sport specific group training! Open to Indigenous athletes that want to improve their game day performance.
On September 21st, 2024, the Manitoba Aboriginal Sports & Recreation Council (MASRC), in partnership with Immigration Partnership Winnipeg's Anti-Racism in Sport Campaign and Athletics Manitoba, proudly hosted the Indigenous Women & Girls Run at St. Vital Park in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This year marked our largest event yet, with over 150 runners and 30 dedicated volunteers joining us to support Indigenous women and girls in sport and recreational programs.
The day began with Elder Joanne Roulette of Sandy Bay First Nation, who opened our gathering in a good way, setting a profound tone for the event. The atmosphere was further enriched by the Binesi Ikwewag Singers and a jingle dress performance by Lacy Bird.
We were honoured to welcome distinguished guests for opening remarks, including the Honourable Bernadette Smith, Point Douglas MLA and Minister of Housing, Addictions and Homelessness; the Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs and Minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada; and Minister Richard Genaille, Minister of Youth & Sports of the Manitoba Metis Federation.
As the day unfolded, a mix of rain and sunshine mirrored the dynamic spirit of our participants. In a heartfelt conclusion, closing remarks were delivered by Emily Mandamin of Iskatewizaagegan #39 First Nation and Samantha Powderhorn, a member of Sayisi Dene First Nation. Their deeply moving words shared personal experiences as Indigenous women growing up in First Nations communities, serving as a powerful reminder of resilience and the importance of sports and recreation in their lives.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this event a success. Your presence and participation made a meaningful impact!
