A History of Excellence: The Untold Stories of Manitoba's Indigenous Sport began as a project spearheaded by the Manitoba Aboriginal Sports & Recreation Council during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Call to Action #87:
"We call upon all levels of government, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, sports halls of fame, and other relevant organizations, to provide public education that tells the national story of Aboriginal athletes in history."
For too long, the stories of Indigenous participation in sport were kept in the shadows, and our stories were forgotten in history. Now, through A History of Excellence, we hope to capture and document the untold stories of sporting excellence that happened both within and beyond our Indigenous communities and nations.
This anthology of historical events was documented and collected by Winnipeg authors Scott Taylor and Carriera Lamoureux, MASRC's sport for Director of Special Projects. Janice Forsyth, a member of Fisher River Cree Nation in Manitoba and leading Indigenous sports historian, wrote the introduction for the 312-page book.
Hardcover and softcover copies of this book are available for purchase.
