December 23, 1995 - September 18, 2024
The Manitoba Aboriginal Sports and Recreation Council (MASRC) is deeply saddened by the passing of Faith Aprel Rain Assiniboine of Long Plain First Nation on September 18, 2024.
Aprel's life was defined by her love for hockey. A true force on the ice, Aprel played hockey her entire life, and her impact on the sport is felt by all who knew her. Her devotion to the game was unmatched, and she was often found at the rink, whether she was playing or helping younger kids learn how to skate. She inspired many, teaching youth how to skate and sharing her love of the game.
Aprel was a proud Team Manitoba alumni, representing her province at the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships in 2013 and 2014. In 2013, she and her teammates won the bronze medal, an achievement that spoke to both her talent and her dedication to her team. She was a key player in these national tournaments, earning respect for her skill, leadership, and unwavering commitment.
Her hockey journey took her to Rainy River College in Minnesota, where she played Division 2 hockey and further honed her skills. Aprel also played for two years with Prairie Blaze in the Manitoba Women's Junior Hockey League, where she earned multiple championships in the Indigenous hockey circuit. Aprel's passion for sports extended beyond hockey. Whether it was at ringette or just helping at local practices, she was always there, always giving back. Her quiet, humble nature made her a beloved figure in the rink, and she was always ready to lend a hand, whether it was tying skates, teaching a new skill, or offering words of encouragement.
Through her life in sports, Aprel formed deep bonds with her teammates, coaches, and the many athletes she mentored. Hockey was more than just a game to Aprel-it was a way for her to connect with others.
She leaves behind a legacy of dedication to the sport and to the next generation of First Nations athletes.
