Grand Rapids mourns the loss of badminton all-star Avery Dick, a talented athlete whose passion for the sport inspired everyone around him. Avery excelled on the court, representing Team North at the 2018 Manitoba Winter Games and earning recognition as one of the best players from Northern Manitoba. Known for his quiet demeanor, he was affectionately called the north's "silent killer" by those who recognized his remarkable skill.
Avery loved playing badminton in his community, often seen practicing outside his home or school until the sun went down. His enthusiasm for the sport extended beyond playing; he enjoyed watching live games online, cheering for his favorite teams from China. His dream was to join the Canadian Olympic team and bring home a gold medal, and his family was immensely proud of his accomplishments. Throughout his badminton journey, Avery won over 30 medals and trophies, each reflecting his dedication and hard work.
In 2017, he represented Team Manitoba at the North American Indigenous Games in Toronto, where he earned a bronze medal. The joy in his home when he returned was unforgettable. In 2018, he continued to shine at the Manitoba Games, adding more medals to his collection.
Avery was not only an exceptional athlete but also a mentor and an inspiration to many. His graceful movements on the court and his positive spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
