On Monday, August 5th, we commemorate Terry Fox Day, a tribute to one of Canada's most inspiring figures in athletics and humanitarian efforts. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Terry Fox, a Métis athlete, faced a life-altering challenge at the age of eighteen when he lost his right leg to cancer. Undeterred by this setback, Fox embarked on a mission that would forever change the landscape of cancer research and advocacy.
In 1980, Fox began his courageous Marathon of Hope, a grueling journey across Canada to raise funds for cancer research. Over 143 days, he ran an astounding 5,375 kilometers, driven by his unwavering determination to find a cure. His efforts were not in vain; by the time of his passing in 1981, Fox had raised $24.17 million for cancer research.
Terry Fox's impact did not end with his passing. In 1981, the first Terry Fox Run was held in over 750 locations across the country, bringing together communities to support cancer research in his name. The Terry Fox Foundation, established in 1988, has continued to honor his legacy by funding innovative cancer research and advocating for awareness.
As we remember Terry Fox on this special day, we celebrate his extraordinary bravery, resilience, and commitment to making a difference. His Marathon of Hope not only advanced cancer research but also inspired countless individuals to take up the mantle of hope and perseverance. Terry Fox's legacy endures through the ongoing efforts of the Terry Fox Foundation and the annual Terry Fox Runs, embodying his spirit of hope and determination in the fight against cancer.
